Delaware The First State/The Diamond State Our page has photos of the quilt blocks that were uniquely designed or chosen to represent the state of Delaware in our Nifty Fifty Quilt Swaps. Delaware's nickname of The First State was because it was the first state to ratify the United States Constitution in 1787. The nickname Diamond State came from Thomas Jefferson who compared the state to a Diamond...small but very valuable. So many of the Delaware State Blocks have Diamonds. Sit back, relax and browse through the beautiful quilt blocks. Learn more about the state of Delaware through our informative and educational links.
